Handy icon organizer for desktop shortcuts

Stardock Fences is a simple icon organizer that creates special boxes where you can store and categorize them in different sections: special tools, Internet stuff, projects in progress, etc. The boxes in Stardock Fences are simply grayed areas which you can customize to your liking by adjusting the color, brightness and transparency levels, and labeling it with a proper name.

You can then distribute those boxes according to one of the program's layout templates or create one of your own. Stardock Fences also includes a special functionality: a double-click anywhere on the desktop hides all desktop icons temporarily, until you double-click again to bring them back.

Stardock Fences is a great way to organize icons on your desktop, but it could be improved with some extra tools, like the ability to add new shortcuts directly into each box or the addition of themes to easily customize the program's appearance.

Easy to use & customize. No silly bells and whistles. I wouldn't be w/o it.. One of the 'Cons' stated in the Softonic review is inaccurate - you can, in fact, designate a box/fence into which new short cuts will be automatically placed. Choose an existing one, or create one for the purpose, e.g. 'New Shortcuts'. This helps keep the desktop organized and tidy, and saves having to hunt down new icons. An excellent little program with one minor flaw in the current version: if you choose 'List' in the Fences view options, you will often find that it defaults to 'Details' view when you next open Windows. For that, I can only score it 9/10. Well worth the low cost.

5 Star gem. Excellent little bug-free program that does it's job simply and effectively without causing mayhem. No reservation in recommending it.

Needs to hold Windows 7 widgets. Overall, I really like it a lot. But I wish the fences could also hold Windows 7 widgets, the same way it holds icons. That would make organizing my widgets a lot easier.

Definitely too unstable. I love this program but like mentioned previously, this program hides desktop icons to the point where you have to remember which icons you had on your desktop already and have to restore them all the time. This should be called a beta and I would definitely pay for it once it works properly and has more options to customize Fences. Pros: Some innovative ideas in this software!Cleanup and sort desktop icons! Cons: Doesn't work properly!

Less stable than caesium-137. Fantastic in theory. Great practical potential. Too many bugs and serious instability to remain on system--unless you don't mind uninstalling and reinstalling on every startup.
